Here’s a selection of news stories I found interesting today, (but I can be easily amused).

This Kiwi story isn’t really anything new, but it does show that New Zealanders are willing to try new things. It’s probably good news, if you’re a sheep.  Bestiality: Man tries to have sex with a goat

At first glance this headline appears to be unbelievable, but it’s a true story. Life must be really difficult for this poor girl.  Teenager allergic to water

What was this guy thinking? Paragliding over bushland really does sound very risky so the ending of the story is no surprise. But what about the dog? Paraglider embarrassed

It’s always wise not to upset the chef when ordering from a restaurant. What you get might be a little more “rare” than you expected. Was that an order for rare or hair?

At last this country has a leader prepared to acknowledge the mistreatment of thousands of Aboriginal people. The apology he delivered on the behalf of the government is a huge step and is long overdue. The damage done to thousands of families can never be completely repaired but the apology is still part of the healing process. Now the country needs to get on with the process of reconciliation.

For hundreds of years Aboriginal people have been treated as inferior beings. Even today, there are many in our society who choose to look down on indigenous Australians. After two centuries of mistreatment, aboriginal people may be downtrodden, but they are not beaten. As members of the oldest surviving culture on the planet, they deserve much more respect.

The introduction to this video gives a little background information and is followed by the apology from the Prime Minister.

Tourism Australia looks beyond ‘controversial campaign’ – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Looks like this tourism campaign is about to be laid to rest. It never really did much for the local tourist industry even though the ads themselves attracted plenty of attention. Personally I think some of the spoof versions may have been more successful. I think the Chaser was on the right track with this one.

Reader’s Comments: Which bank gouges you? | News.com.au

I’ve been reading (and had to contribute) the comments posted on this news story. It’s amazing how many people offer comments that have no basis in reality. Some are blaming the current government which has been in power for less than 2 months, some are blaming the previous government.

In reality, the world economy is in a bit of a mess at the moment and I personally don’t believe any Australian government has that much influence on international business.

Banks are a business and they will endeavour to make a profit. It’s a simple fact. If their costs increase, they will pass those costs on to consumers. It’s unfortunate for those who have large loans and although I do sympathise, I think those that borrowed need to accept the consequences of their own decision. They made the decision to take out a loan. They agreed to the terms of a variable loan. It’s too to late complain about now.

Well, that’s my opinion anyway, it’s the only only one I have. ;)

George W Bush, White House told 935 lies after September 11 | NEWS.com.au

This story is probably no surprise to anybody with any amount of commonsense. It’s disturbing that the bogus Iraq WMD and Al Quaeda stories continued for so long. On the other hand, it’s not hard to believe that 259 of these lies were told by dubya himself. I certainly wouldn’t trust the guy. After 9/11 the American people were certainly vulnerable. The Bush administration exploited that vulnerability in their efforts to stage unnecessary and most likely illegal acts of war.
